DIY AC Coil Cleaning Tips
Some ambitious homeowners like to tackle the project of cleaning their AC coils. It can be a messy job, but with the right safety precautions and the correct cleaning products a weekend warrior do-it-yourselfer can get it done. Here are a few step-by-step instructions. First, a few notes of caution. The coil cleaning solution can be very caustic, so be sure to wear protective gloves and eyeglasses. Avoid any contact with your skin. Also, when spraying the coils, avoid using too much pressure as this can damage them or could create some unwanted splash back. How to clean your AC coils yourself:
- Disconnect off the power at the source or switch the breaker off.
- Remove the outer panel.
- With a spray nozzle connected to your hose, spray the coils thoroughly to soak them. Do not allow the drain pan to overflow by stopping and allowing the water to drain out of the drain hose.
- Spray the coils thoroughly with a coil cleaner. We suggest an alkaline-based foamer, which will degrease the surface of the coils and dissolve the dirt and grime that has built up.
- Let stand for about 15 minutes.
- Rinse again with water from your hose. You should see the dark grime come off the coils. Be sure to completely remove all of the cleaning solution from the coils. Once again, remember to not allow the drain pan to overflow.
- If possible, use a wet/dry vacuum to remove any remaining dirt and water left in the drain pan.
If this seems like more than you would like to take on, or if you would prefer to have it done by a certified, licensed professional, call us and your coils will be clean before you know it and at a very reasonable price.
